Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown tells the true story of the University of Washington’s rowing team, from their Depression-era beginnings to the 1936 Berlin Olympics where they won gold against Germany in the lead-up to the second world war.
Today, their inspiring story has been adapted for the big screen. To commemorate the December 17 early release of the film Boys in the Boat, directed by George Clooney, we have compiled this list of news, community events, screenings, and more to acknowledge this important occasion in Washington’s maritime history. The nationwide release of The Boys in the Boat is December 25, but many showings are available throughout the Puget Sound before then—so don’t miss your chance for a sneak peek!

How you can support the Associated Students of the University of Washington Shellhouse—the home of the Boys in the Boat team:
The ASUW Shell House is holding a capital campaign to restore the historic building and create a learning and gathering space for students and the community. Boys in the Boat author Daniel James Brown said “I see this building as a reminder of who we are and what we value, and also as a kind of icon of Seattle’s identity – a monument, a museum, a workspace, a gathering place on the water where we can pull together, to collaborate, to innovate, and to celebrate our unique identity.”
