In April 1833, the Hudson’s Bay Company established a stockade and trading post called Fort Nisqually on Sequalitchew Creek on the Nisqually Delta, becoming the first permanent European settlement on Puget Sound. Today, the site is home to a recreation of the original Fort—including the historic Granary and Factor’s House—and is open to the public as a living history museum in Tacoma’s Point Defiance Park.
During our field trip, we’ll explore how Fort Nisqually uses living history and exhibits as methods to interpret our state’s maritime heritage. We’ll end our day with a debrief led by interpretive specialist Emily Jacobs.
